Top Secret America, A Must Read.

I have mixed emotions on the following Washington Post article, Top Secret America. On the one hand, I'm more than happy to increase our surveillance of muslim activities inside and outside of America. After all, they're the ones perpetrating hideous acts of terrorism against our country. On the other hand, this appears to be overkill by a factor of twenty, and assets and activities on this magnitude invevitably end up being used against regular American citizens to quell political dissent.

Are you paying attention Tea Partiers? I sure do hope so...

A hidden world, growing beyond control

The top-secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work.

These are some of the findings of a two-year investigation by The Washington Post that discovered what amounts to an alternative geography of the United States, a Top Secret America hidden from public view and lacking in thorough oversight. After nine years of unprecedented spending and growth, the result is that the system put in place to keep the United States safe is so massive that its effectiveness is impossible to determine.

The investigation's other findings include:

* Some 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10,000 locations across the United States.

* An estimated 854,000 people, nearly 1.5 times as many people as live in Washington, D.C., hold top-secret security clearances...

  1. Hi! I'm glad you covered this; When I awoke this AM I put on the news and heard that there was quite some controversy the Post had revealed about our 'intelligence'..I was afraid to know more and turned the channel!
Well,....imagine people Obama's got in there leading groups they don't believe in and aren't competent enough to lead anyhow? (except maybe for Panetta)
So, what to do? What will it take for these creeps to turn on US? Much? I wonder how many America-loving Conservatives are in this huge bunch of top-secret people. I think those groups used to be full ONLY of America-loving people; we rested easier then, didn't we.

I'm still waiting for Napalitano to get the new Black Panthers who called for the killing of white "cracker" babies to go on the DHS terror list, but Pelosi's not urging that like she did the white guys she was scared of..hmmmm

  2. Z I had NO IDEA it was this big--overwhelming in it's scope. I think there are a few things at play here. What seemingly started as a beefing up of intelligence assets to respond to the 9-11 threat was seen as an opportunity by BIG government types to keep track of people like you and I. The history of Totalitarian states is replete with tracking the personal information of all of it's citizens.

What the hell else could explain the monstrous size of this?

  3. Yaaaaa!!!! Great news!

Lynne Stewart, communist traitor, lawyer to terrorists, and re-used scumbag extraordinaire, was sentenced to 10 years by a judge in Manhattan!

That just makes today all the more sunnier. :-) It's a good day.

  6. Carol I'm a businessman, and cannot "disappear" off the grid. If I was financially set, and had no other responsibilities I swear I'd get a cabin for cash in the mountains, use cash only and stay off the internet.

Our government is SO far out of control that it's scary as hell. It's no exaggeration to say that we're witnessing a fascist takeover. Obama isn't constrained by considerations--like being re-elected. He's doing purpseful damage.

  9. HI, Jingoist...the more I hear on this, the more I worry. I think it's an ENORMOUS mistake and dangerous move on Dana Priest's part to reveal so much. Of course, I'd be even MORE angry were this a Republican president's term and we could trust that at least his motives were pro America. As it is, it's probably better to blow the lid off...but kids are in charge, so NOW WHAT?!!
