It's time to REPEAL the 17th amendment!
Senators should be selected by their respective state legislatures. That was the intent of the Founders in Article 1, Section 3, Clause 1 :
"The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature thereof, for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote."
This insured that each state would have actual and adequate representation in the Senate. Representatives take care of the interests of their districts, while the STATES have less official representation than foreign countries who have lobbyists bending the ears of Senators at all hours. Making these Senators directly accountable to the State legislatures is an idea whose time has come...again!
The 17th Amendment will have to be repealed. That's a heavy lift, and sadly would probably be fought along partisan lines. Radical special interest groups with deeeeep pockets, like MoveOn.org, George Soros, A.C.O.R.N. and others seem to have more pull with some our Senators than we voters do. During the health care takeover debates I called the office of my Senator, Bill Nelson, to register my disapproval of ObamaCare. A very nice and courteous young man took my call. I asked him how the callers were reacting on this subject. He told me that I was one of his "younger" callers, and that most of the people who called him felt the same way I did. They were AGAINST "health care reform." His words.
Bill Nelson voted FOR this wretched bill!
Now I ask you, who had more representation when Senator Nelson voted for this bill? The deep-pocketed left-wing NUT ROOTS, or the retirees in the state of Florida who will have their Medicare SLASHED by over $500 Billion to pay for this legislation?
More than any other state, Florida is a retirement state. A travesty like Bill Nelson's ObamaCare vote (aye!) would NEVER have occured if Senator Nelson was actually representing the best interests of the people of the Sunshine State.
ObamaCare cuts half a trillion from Medicare! Just who did Bill Nelson represent with his affirmative vote?
Take a hard look at your own Senators and ask yourself who they are REALLY working for?
It's time to repeal the 17th Amendment. It's time to reign in Washington DC by making our Senators more accountable to their own states.

a hard look at MY senators? FEINSTEINN and BOXER!? They're working for THEMSELVES :-)
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of repealing the 17th...you think it could ever happen!?
Z, I really think it could. At least 1/2 of the Senators might like the idea...the ones who've done the bidding of their states over certain special interests. It would certainly favor the GOP since they're less apt to be in the pocket of radical special interest groups like MoveOn and the like.
ReplyDeleteIf these Senators had to face an angry governor or state legislature they'd get their acts together PRETTY damned quick indeed!
Another thing Z; Feinstein and Boxer?! Ugh! I feel for you. At leats with Nelson we have a stupid ex-astronaut--I think the guy's really dumb believe it or not. Our other Senator's a RINO in the pocket of our gay left-wing governor Crist. His name is Lemeaux (lu-mew).
ReplyDeleteI'm totally on board. The 17th Amendment is clearly one of the worst things that ever happened to this country.
ReplyDeleteI AGREE!!!
ReplyDeleteThe original intent of our Founders when writing the Constitution and BoR-was to protect the new US against an oppressive / Fed government..thus-power to the states
C-CS
Right Klik and Christian Soldier, repealing the 17th would be one of the MOST effective ways to once again de-centralize power. We MIGHT be able to get this done with a Republican congress--maybe.
ReplyDeleteWith our current lot of commissars dominated by the likes of Piglosi & Reid, you can forget it. It's important enough for our country going forward that we need to make it a TOP priority.
Hello my friend..It's time to repeal the 17th Amendment. It's time to reign in Washington DC by making our Senators more accountable to their own states. ..great point actually..look a the Senator tyrant in the WH!!!
ReplyDeleteWHT are you referring to the present-voting erstwhile Senator from Illinois who is only RUMORED to have warmed the seat in his quest for the White House?
